Community, Celebration, and Conservation were the main themes of Houston Bird Week 2025! During the 7th annual Bird Week, a total of 38 events were held across the Houston region which attracted over 2,000 participants. These events, which included bird walks at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, a Birdy Trivia Night at Frost Town Brewing, and a Bird and Bike ride along the Columbia Tap Trail, welcomed the Houston community into the vibrant bird habitats within our city.
Each of the events provided unique experiences for the participants who attended. For example, the conversations we had and the people we met at the Freaks Fun Run Social were different from those at the Community Party. This only goes to highlight the variety of people drawn to Bird Week. One of the most memorable gatherings was the Zine-making at the Young Professionals Flock Social at The Orange Show. Participants were invited to express their creativity and imagine the world through the eyes of a bird. With markers, crayons, and colored pencils, we crafted zines that answered prompts like “where is the best view” and “what do you dream about”. This was an especially fun night of art and storytelling which helped us to see the natural world as something we’re all part of.
What tied all of these experiences together was the powerful sense of community. It was especially inspiring to see so many new faces and people discovering birding for the first time and realizing how rich and alive Houston’s habitats truly are. Beyond the fun, each event helped raise awareness about protecting bird habitats across the Gulf Coast. Frost Town Brewing brewed a special beer, the Shorebird Shandy, to help raise awareness about Houston Audubon’s habitat conservation efforts (as well as a great t-shirt to match!) 15% of proceeds go directly toward acquiring the last remaining piece of land to complete Houston Audubon’s largest preserve, the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary. Participants learned how everyday actions, from planting native plants to reducing light pollution, can make a positive impact on the birds who also call Houston home.
The success of Houston Bird Week 2025 was only possible through our amazing partner organizations, dedicated volunteers, and enthusiastic participants. We sincerely thank everyone who took part in this year’s events and we eagerly look forward to making next year’s event even better!
