In Memoriam: Craig Damuth, a Champion for Conservation

Houston Audubon is sad to share the passing of a dear friend and visionary conservationist, Steven Craig Damuth.

Craig didn’t just appreciate nature; he dedicated his life to ensuring it would endure for generations. From his early days birding and fishing in the pineywoods of East Texas, Craig developed a deep-seated belief that habitat was the ultimate priority—a passion he often jokingly referred to as his “broken record.”

The Damuth name is woven into the very fabric of Houston Audubon’s history. Following the lead of his father, Malcolm, Craig and his family were instrumental in the establishment of the Damuth Sanctuary and Winters Bayou Sanctuary. Beyond this, Craig’s influence was felt through the Malcolm C. Damuth Foundation and his tireless support of land acquisition efforts across Texas and the tropics.

Whether through his nature videography, his quiet generosity in land purchases, or his role in protecting over 28,000 acres of tropical forest, Craig’s legacy is written on the landscape itself. We are honored to be stewards of the land he loved so much.
