Please join us in welcoming our new Membership and Event Coordinator, Jesi Malowitz! Jesi Malowitz is a native Ohioan who has lived in Houston since 2004. Originally a 7th grade mathematics teacher, her two girls Eleanor (8) and Benny (6) have kept her very busy as a stay-at-home mom over the past several years, especially working for their school’s PTO planning events and volunteering. Jesi has a passion for conservation, being out in nature and of course, birds.
Jesi answered a few questions for us so everyone can get to know her a little better.
1. What brought you to Houston Audubon?
I am thrilled and honored to be part of such an amazing organization. I have taken full advantage of the HAS sanctuaries and I am happy to be able to be a part of all of the good work that is done to support birds and their spaces.
2. What is your favorite place to explore nature in Houston?
I have so many places I love to go! The Houston Arboretum, great for going to with the kids, also Cullinan Park, Willow Waterhole, and of course Edith L. Moore.
3. What are your hobbies?
Eating! I hit the lottery by marrying an amazing cook, so I get to partake in some great meals. Also, hiking, gardening and birding.
4. What is your favorite city that you’ve visited?
I have a friend who lives in Portland, Oregon and I love going to visit there. The city has so much to offer and the Oregon coast is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.
5. Do you have a favorite bird?
Oddly enough, I love Black Vultures. I think they are so beautiful. In the spring of 2020, when all the birds were being weird (less humans about because of COVID), I had a pair that visited my backyard every day. They didn’t want food-all they wanted was to play with my kids’ toys outside. They’d drag the hula-hoop around, peck at balls and chase each other in the play house. It was the oddest behavior I have ever seen but it was so enjoyable to watch. We fell in love with them.
6. Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have a dog, Pickles, a big orange cat named Cosmo and two Brazilian Cherry-headed Tortoises, Starla and Daisy. I love all of them, but Pickles was my first child so I think I love her the most!
7. What’s your favorite rainy-day activity?
Laying on the couch dozing and having a Lord of the Rings marathon on the TV.
8. Where would you most like to visit?
I have always wanted to go to Alaska but have never had the chance. The landscape looks beautiful and the wildlife would be incredible. Especially all of the Bald Eagles, which I hear are like pigeons there!
9. What makes you laugh the most?
My kids. The stuff they say is so funny and they have no idea. One of my favorites:
Husband: “The Astros always beat the Yankees. We just chew them up every time!”
Benny: “……You can’t eat baseball players. You aren’t allowed to put them in your mouth!”
10. What are three words that describe you?
Loving, outdoorsy, feisty
Please join us in welcoming Jesi to the Houston Audubon team, and be sure to say hello when you see her at a Houston Audubon event!

When will you have another auction for raising fund? I missed my item last time because I bid online and I could not attend life event. I was in NY. Someone bid over me $20 and I lost it. Thanks.
